BOURNE VALLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY, Spring 2023

Founded in 1948 by just 12 residents of The Winterbournes, the Society now includes all the Bourne Valley villages as far as Cholderton and has some 70 members.  Celebrations for our 75th anniversary commenced at our February meeting with an amazing presentation of the Society’s documents, books, photographs and artefacts, creatively displayed by our Archivist, Angela Armstrong.  With free refreshments and drinks available, the evening brought in a lot of visitors and generated ten new members.  There are due to be further celebrations on 16th March, when we enjoy an anniversary cake and listen to local author and journalist, Annabel Venning, talk on her latest book, “To War with the Walkers”, about the experiences of one family in World War 2.

Forthcoming meetings are listed below:

  • April 27th:  Note change from 3rd Thursday.  Dan Miles, “The Band of Brothers, Aldbourne”
  • May 18th:  Jenny Head and Anne Johns, “The Hardy Sisters”
  • June 15th:  Geoff Lang, “History of Salisbury Market Place”
  • July 20th:   Supper meeting, with a Picture Quiz, plus Film and Slide show of the Bourne Valley
  • September 21st, October 19th, November 16th   Speakers to be confirmed

All meetings take place in Winterbourne Glebe Hall and commence at 7.30pm, apart from the Supper Meeting in July.  More information on this meeting will follow. The Society does not meet in August and December.

Visitors are welcome to attend up to two meetings for a donation, before they are asked to join.

Membership of the Society is currently £16 per person per annum and includes attendance at all lectures plus a monthly Newsletter containing a summary of the previous month’s lecture.  Members also have access to our large archive collection and can borrow material to study at home.
